Concrete is a vital material in the field of civil engineering. It is widely used and serves many purposes. It is one of the most extensively used materials throughout the world. This web page discusses and exemplifies the uses of concrete in several different focuses of civil engineering. These focuses consist of the environmental area, land development area, structural area, and transportation area.
This web page serves as a project completed by four undergraduate civil engineering students at the Pennsylvania State University. The project was performed as a requirement for a Civil Engineering Materials Science class (CE 336) under the supervision of Dr. Paul Tikalsky.
The specific goal of the project is to discuss a material discussed in the class listed above. Being that each member of the group researched a different focus of civil engineering, it was of the groups’ interest to express the extensive use of concrete in today’s society.

In particular, this section of the website focuses on concrete used in the construction of parking lots. Included is the design of the parking lot, construction, advantages of using concrete, and also drainage considerations and new technology used in this sector of the field.

In particular, this section of the website focuses on concrete used in the construction of post-tensioned concrete structures. Included is design of a post-tensioned concrete structure, construction and maintenance, advantages of using concrete, and also new technology used in this area of the field.
This section focuses on the importance of concrete in the environmental field of civil engineering. Included are the uses of concrete in a typical sanitary sewer system. It discusses why specific types of concrete are used in a sanitary sewer system rather than other types. A description of the composition of wastewater, a wastewater treatment plant schematic, and other related topics are also discussed.
This section will discuss the different types of concrete used in air traffic runways and taxiways. Also it will discuss some of the major problems faced in the design and planning stages, and some of their solutions. In this section you will be able to find specks for thickness and length.
